Prada and Axiom Space Partner for Innovative Lunar Space Suit Project

Prada joins forces with Axiom Space to revolutionize space suits for NASA’s Artemis III mission. Explore this groundbreaking collaboration between Prada and Axiom Space, shaping the future of space exploration with advanced technology and design expertise.

Prada has entered into a pioneering partnership with Axiom Space, the firm behind the world’s first commercial space station, to collaborate on NASA’s lunar space suits intended for the Artemis III mission. This groundbreaking alliance brings together an Italian luxury fashion house with a commercial space enterprise.

The Artemis mission, slated for 2025, marks a significant milestone as it will be the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in December 1972 and the first mission to include a woman on the moon.

Michael Suffredini, the CEO of Axiom Space, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Prada on the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) space suit. He praised Prada’s technical expertise in raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts. These qualities are expected to contribute advanced technologies crucial not only for ensuring the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface but also for addressing human factors considerations that were lacking in earlier space suits.

Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group’s marketing director, emphasized that the project is still in its preliminary phase. Suffredini’s team visited Italy to gain insights into Prada’s capabilities, including their expertise in materials and composite frameworks. Developing space suits is a complex task involving a combination of various materials and intricate design considerations.

The collaboration between Prada and Axiom aims to create a space suit that is flexible from its inner layer to its outer layer while taking into account the operation of life support systems. Every component, including fabrics, plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and functionality of the suit, particularly in the challenging lunar environment.

Prada will establish a dedicated team, including engineers, to work closely with Axiom throughout the design process. Their primary objectives are to prioritize safety, meet Axiom’s expectations, and deliver a high-quality product on time.

Axiom Space is currently involved in end-to-end missions to the International Space Station and is working on Axiom Station, a permanent commercial destination in low-Earth orbit for sustained human activity beyond Earth.

The AxEMU space suit will provide astronauts with advanced capabilities for space exploration while offering NASA commercially developed human systems for lunar missions.

Prada’s expertise in fabrics, which originated from their Luna Rossa project, has influenced their fashion endeavors. When asked about the potential impact of this project on fashion, Bertelli indicated a focus on long-term goals and learning from the experience of Axiom and NASA.

Suffredini stressed the importance of Prada’s ability to deliver both in design and manufacturing, as safety and reliability are paramount in space suit development. The choice of a partner in such a significant endeavor is crucial due to the critical nature of the space suit’s function.

Bertelli highlighted the difference between fashion and technical functionality, where technical needs often drive design choices. However, there is room for a holistic approach to design.

The space suit designs aim to accommodate a wide range of astronauts and must address challenges such as temperature control. The emphasis is on technical constraints rather than aesthetic choices.

Suffredini expressed the interest in seeking partners like Prada, noting that Prada’s technological advancements and expertise in composites make the fashion house a valuable asset to the project. The collaboration extends beyond fashion design and encompasses technological advancements and composite materials.
